It was a rough night for the Raiders Friday as they hosted the Logan-Magnolia Panthers (8-1) in the second round of playoff football.
The first quarter came and went, with both teams getting inside the redzone, however, the quarter ended with the Panthers ready to pounce, inside the 13.
With quarters being 12 minutes long, the first quarter lasted a total of 18 minutes real-time.
The Panthers would go on to score 20 in the second quarter, with one point-after blocked by Mount Ayr’s Hunter Case.
Going into halftime, the Raiders trailed 20-0 and wouldn’t score until late in the fourth to end the Logan-Magnolia shutout.
The Raiders held the Panthers to 14 in the second-half, but the season came to an end as the clock hit zeros and Logan-Magnolia advanced to the next round.
“We ran into a buzz saw of a team,” said coach Ryan Victor. “They were playing some really good football.”
That buzz saw, recorded 342 yards of offense, all on the ground with 55 attempts, with one pass attempted all night. The pass fell incomplete.
The Raiders ran the ball 25 times for 146 yards and passed the ball 14 times, connecting on eight for 66 yards.
Coach Victor is very familiar with the Panthers, coming from Missouri Valley who saw them annually.
“If you know anything about Logan-Magnolia, it’s they get better with each game,” said Victor. “They are built for this and they are tough. Their fullback is the toughest back we’ve seen all year their offensive line is huge and physical.”
Coach Victor wished they could’ve executed better and found the endzone a few more times.
“That’s a good football team. They are number four in the state for a reason,” said Victor. “You can’t take anything away from them. They took advantage of our mistakes.”
Depsite the loss, the Raiders had enjoyed a five game win streak up until Friday night with the first two losses came against Nodaway Valley in week 1 and Riverside in week 3.
At 2-2, most didn’t expect a district championship for the Raiders, but in week eight, the Raiders defeated Southwest Valley for the title, head coachVictor’s career first, as well as a playoff win against Madrid the following week, another first for coach Victor.
“I think it says how resilient and tough our kids are. I know that was a huge goal. We were 2-2 and we rattled off five in a row against really good football teams,” said coach Victor. “They bought in each week and it paid off. I couldn’t ask for a better season. It was a great time, it was a great year in a great community. I couldn’t ask for anything else.”
