The Raiderettes had a tough battle with the East Union Eagles last Friday night, in their first game in 10 days after the Mount Ayr school system shut down due to illness.
The closure also meant the teams couldn’t come in to practice, so a Thursday practice before the contest was the first time the team had been together since the loss to Lenox the week prior.
“I was worried about our conditioning, while it didn’t look too bad tonight,” said coach Thad Streit. “Our shooting wasn’t too bad, either.”
The Raiderettes took an 11-6 lead in the first quarter, and never gave the lead up.
The Eagles continued to battle back throughout the night, trailing by four points in the third quarter, after outscoring the Raiderettes 13-8, however, a strong fourth quarter helped Mount Ayr distance themselves from the Eagles to take a 55-36 win and improve to 8-6 on the season.
“We played great defense tonight,” said coach Streit. “Except for the fouling. We put them on the line way too much tonight.”
The Raiderettes fouled 13 times, with the Eagles hitting 11-of-20 freethrows.
In comparison, the Raiderettes were good on 20-of-38 shots from the line.
Leading the scoring for Mount Ayr was Maddie Stewart who scored 19 on the night after having a nice second-half, while Jill Kniep scored 13 and led the team in the first-half.
Stewart led the team in steals with seven and also shot eight-of-13 from the line.
Kniep was four-of-nine from the field and five-of-five from the line, while collecting eight rebounds and one steal.
Halsie Barnes led the team in rebounds with 10 and recorded one steal.

CD 58, Mt. Ayr 40
Monday was a tough night for the Mount Ayr Raiderettes as they hit the road for the first time since January 4 when they traveled to Des Moines to play at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Raiderettes were hosted by the Central Decatur Cardinals in a Pride of Iowa Conference matchup that ended with a Cardinal victory, improving the Cardinals to 10-7 on the season, while dropping the Raiderettes to 9-7.
Central Decatur got out to a hot start, scoring 17 in the first quarter while only allowing six to Mount Ayr.
The Raiderettes were unable to overcome the deficit and ultimately fell 58-40.
“We weren’t very sharp on the offensive end tonight,” said coach Thad Streit. “We panicked a bit and got out of sync.”
The Raiderettes were led by Maddie Stewart with 13 points and Tegan Streit with eight.
Payten Lambert scored five, off a three point shot and two free throws, while Janna Irving also scored five on a three-point and a two-point shot.
It was a relatively clean game for the Mount Ayr girls, committing only nine fouls, however, 24 turnovers made a difference in giving the Cardinals plenty of opportunity to score.
