The Raider basketball team took to the court after a 10 day abscence after illness caused a school closure last week.
East Union came to town and the Raiders protected their 12-1 record to improve to 13-1 on the season after a dominating win over the Eagles.
By the first quarter, the Raiders had led the Eagles 28-3, with the Eagles scoring the first bucket and a free-throw before the Raiders went off.
The majority of the Raiders points were scored in the first-half, with 26 scored in the second, before the Raiders took their foot off the gas in the second-half and used the 54-14 lead to work on fundamentals and try a new look in preparation for Martensdale-St. Mary’s next week.
“We were up 54-14, that game was over, we knew it at halftime,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “The key for us, I wanted to see us execute in the second half. I put a stipulation on them that they couldn’t have any runouts, fast breaks, just run our offense. We could have put a bunch of points up, but we need to work on the next piece.”
The Raiders were led by Riley Stark and Jaixen Frost, each scoring 13 points on the night, while Braydon Pierson scored 10 and Cody Larson put up nine.
Trevin Victor scored on two three-pointers to put six points up on the board, while Tyler Martin scored five and Ryce Reynolds had four.
The Raiders were 13-o-f-18 from the free throw line and only turned the ball over nine times and committed 10 fouls on the night.
Coach Ruggles is preparing the Raiders for a POI gauntlet this week, with Central Decatur on Monday, followed by Nodaway Valley on Tuesday and Bedford on Friday, before meeting Martensdale-St. Mary’s next Tuesday, February 8.
“College has championship week, well we don’t have that in high school, but you can put yourself into a situation similar,” said coach Ruggles. “That’s what we have next week. If you beat East Union, now you’re in the second round, you have to go beat CD. It’s a huge game Monday night. They will be ready.”
