The Raider baseball team had a short break after a postponement of the Wayne vs Mount Ayr contest Tuesday, June 7, which seemed beneficial for the arms and bats of the Mount Ayr team as they hosted Nodaway Valley last Friday night.
Both teams headed into the Pride of Iowa matchup undefeated in the conference.
The Raiders were fueled by four home runs from Adler Shay, Jaixen Frost, Jaydon Knight and Cody Larson.
Going eight-for-24 at the plate, the Raiders bosted a .333 average and saw 12 RBI.
Jaixen Frost was walked twice, once intentionally, recorded one hit, three runs and struck out once.
“Caelen [DeVault] was throwing good, he struck me out and I was a little disappointed in myself, but he’s a good pitcher. Striking out to that caliber of pitcher you can’t really be that disappointed,” said Frost. “The next time I was up I was going to make it count.”
The Raider base running was more aggressive than usual with seven stolen bases, including home plate by Jaixen Frost.
The Raiders only committed one error behind pitchers Jaixen Frost and Jace Grose who combined for four strikeouts, three runs allowed and two hits.
The win put the Raiders as the final undefeated team in the conference race at this point.
“We just got to keep doing what we’re doing and focus on one game at a time and focus on each opponent and wherever we end up at the end of the year is where we will end up,” said coach Anthony Maldonado.
Coach Bill Hutnington touched on the game and what he took away from the win.
“Nodaway Valley is a good team. I think they put one of the better pitchers in the state in play a lot,” said coach Huntington. “We don’t throw Jaixen a lot but they put him into play. What I’m ecstatic about is how many ground balls were in play. Riley Stark made some nice plays, Raines [Sackett] had a nice play, Jace Grose had a good one, so I was really pleased with the effort of the infield.”
