Mount Ayr 63, Lamoni 24
The winter basketball season got underway last Tuesday with the Lamoni Demons traveling to Mount Ayr to face the Raiderettes.
The Raiderettes started strong, putting up 19 points in the first quarter, while allowing only three to the Demons.
Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit wanted to start fast and keep the Demons on their heels, a game plan that the Demons also had.
“We wanted to speed them up and what we wanted to do to them, they did to us,” said coach Streit. “We kind of freaked out and our legs went faster than our feet. They did a good job.”
The second quarter belonged to the Demons, outscoring the Raiderettes 12-10, however, the home girls led at the halftime buzzer, 29-15.
The second half saw the Raiderettes allow only nine points, while scoring 34 to win 63-24 for the first “W” of the season.
The win wasn’t the most graceful win that Mount Ayr has had though, committing 17 turnovers and shooting 49.1 percent from the field and a 50 percent efficiency from the free throw line.
“We had silly fouls and they played chaotic and we had stupid turnovers,” said coach Streit. “We need to make sure we take care of that, but our defense did a great job of keeping them off the board.”
The Raiderettes grabbed 45 rebounds on the night, splitting it almost down the middle, with a slight edge to the defensive rebounds with 24, while also recording 16 steals on the night.
Leading the scorers on the night was Tabby Henle, making five-of-six shots, including three-of-three three-pointers. Henle picked up two-of-three free throws in her time on the court as well.
Breya Nickle led the Raiderette rebounds with 15 total, as well as leading the team in steals with five.
Tegan Streit had a good game all around as well, with 13 rebounds, 11 from the Lamoni side of the court, six assists and four steals.
The Mount Ayr offense saw four different Raiderettes in double digit scoring, along with Henle.
Jill Kniep would put up 14 on the night, while MaKenna Jones and Linsie Barnes each had 10.

Clarke 56, Mount Ayr 50
Mount Ayr hosted the Clarke Indians on Monday, November 28 for the second contest of the season.
It was a tight contest throughout, however, the Clarke three-point game was impressive with five three’s made in the first half, that propelled the Indians to a halftime lead of 33-25.
It’s a lead that Clarke wouldn’t give up, despite the best efforts of the Raiderettes, who outscored the Indians 12-6 in the third quarter.
The Raiderettes got within two, but were unable to overcome the deficit before the clock ran out, falling to Clarke for the first time in seven games, and the third time in history.
Tegan Streit led the team in points with 20, as well as rebounds with a total of 13. Streit was also on top of the board in assists with eight.
As a team the Raiderettes shot 39.6 percent and made only three-of-14 threes on the night and nine-of-14 free throws.
“We knew Clarke was going to be tough, it was a tough game last year and after the death of Abbi, practice hasn’t been going so well,” said Streit. “We knew our mind wasn’t there, and we had to give our all, our best and give 100 percent.”
The team lost a friend and classmate in a tragic vehicle accident last Friday and the team wanted to practice over the weekend for a sense of normalcy.
Both Clarke and Mount Ayr wore teal accessories in memory of Abbi Overholser.
Coach Streit spoke on the difficult time and how he prepared the girls to play Monday night.
“You have to get a feel for them, see how their emotions are and if they are ready to go,” said Streit. “They wanted to practice Saturday, which was the next day and they were out of it. It’s tough when you lose a friend, a classmate. Sunday they were a little more focused, a few more smiles. It’s tough dealing with that situation.”
Overall, coach Streit was pleased with how his team played, but noticed there were a few things they needed to clean up.
“We were really worried about the Dunbar girl. She is a smooth athlete. She doesn’t miss from six feet away,” said Streit. “We tried to speed them up, make it a half-court game, just couldn’t overcome their three-point shooting.”
The Raiderettes will face their first conference match-up this Friday against the Southwest Valley Timberwolves.
