Mount Ayr 69, SWV 42
Last Friday, Mount Ayr hosted the Southwest Valley Timberwolves in the first Pride of Iowa matchup of the basketball season.
The Raiderettes came out swinging, as Breya Nickle found rhthym from outside the arc, making four-of-seven threes, one from inside and four from the freethrow line, for an 18-point total on the night.
“After the first couple it boosted my confidence,” said Nickle who also recorded eight rebounds on the night. “It feels really good to get this win”
Nickle led the team in steals with four and had three assists for the night.
“Even last year you could see the potential that she was going to play varsity last year,” said coach Thad Streit about Nickle. “Breaking her wrist last year, allowed Jaxy to blossom and take the JV on her shoulders. They have both improved. Breya can play multiple positions, though still learning the post position she is so athletic she can make things happen.”
The Raiderettes jumped ahead early, 15-6 before taking a 39-16 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Timberwolves outscored the Raiderettes 23-12, however, Mount Ayr still led 51-39 and only allowed three points in the fourth quarter.
Three other Raiderettes broke into double digit scoring with Tegan Streit at 11, Linsie Barnes with 10 and Tabby Henle with 10.
Coach Streit was pleased with the win but saw a lot of cleanup the team needed to do before facing a tough Lenox Tiger team on Tuesday.
“We are tied for first place in the conference, everyone has one win. You can say a win is a win, but we have some things we need to clean up,” said Streit. “We missed some layups, we got sloppy defensively in the second half and there are some teams that would be thrilled with what happened tonight but we have a standard and tradition and a lot of that stuff shouldn’t have happened.”
The Raiderettes committed 13 turnovers and had 12 fouls in the victory.
As a team the Raiderettes shot 44.4 percent on the night, while hitting 50 percent of threes and 56.5 percent of free throws.
Improving to 2-1 on the season, the Raiderettes faced Lenox on Tuesday in Mount Ayr.
