Raiderettes suffer first POI loss

Nodaway Valley 63, Mount Ayr 47
The Raiderettes couldn’t overcome Lindsey Davis and the Nodaway Valley Wolverines last week at home, falling to the Nodaway Valley basketball team, 63-47, dropping the Mount Ayr girls to 7-2 on the season.
Mount Ayr struck first in the contest, but Nodaway Valley quickly jumped ahead, 19-5 after the first eight minutes.
That quarter made a difference in the contest, with the Raiderettes staying with the Wovlerines throughout the next three quarters, but closing the deficit proved hard to do.
The Raiderettes shot 38.2 percent from on the night, hitting five-of-12 threes and 16-of-26 freethrows.
The Wolverines shot 39.4 percent in their victory, while hitting three-of-20 threes and eight-of-13 freethrows.
The Raiderettes recorded 30 rebounds to Nodaway Valley’s 37, while recording seven steals. The Wolverines recorded 22 steals on the night.
Mount Ayr was led by Breya Nickle with 13 points, while Tegan Streit recorded 10 to round out the double digit scorers.
MaKenna Jones scored seven, a personal season-high for the senior, making five-of-six freethrows and one layup.
Jones proved to be a tough piece of the puzzle for the Wolverines to figure out, recording three of the Raiderettes seven steals.
“I knew I had to do something, they are good,” said Jones. “I needed to be aggressive and shoot more than I normally do. We tried to shut her down [Lindsey Davis] on threes and she’s just good.”
The Wolverines were led by Lindsey Davis who shot nine-of-17 buckets on the night, along with two three-pointers and four-of-six freethrows.
Davis scored 24 points, while Izzy Eisbach had 16 and Jorja Holliday secured 14 points.
“She’s a good guard. She can shake and bake. They are fast and we didn’t stop them,” said coach Thad Streit. “We tried to play too fast and once we calmed down in the second half we stayed right with them.”
The loss broke a three-way tie in the Pride of Iowa between Mount Ayr, Central Decatur and Nodaway Valley, with Mount Ayr taking the first loss.
