Mount Ayr 49,
Bedford 23
Winter break came to an end and the Raiderettes were able to shake off the rust and take a 49-23 win over the Bedford Bulldogs last Friday night, improving to 8-2 on the season.
It was anyone’s game int he first half as both teams struggled to gain any traction, but Mount Ayr would hold a 19-16 lead after the first two quarters.
Halftime adjustments proved to be successful for Mount Ayr, particularly on defense, as the Raiderettes outscored Bedford 30-7.
Sophomore Jaxy Knight had a career game, scoring 11 points to lead the team with senior Tegan Streit, who also scored 11 points on the night.
Knight was three-for-nine altogether, but made two key three’s along with shooting three-of-four at the line.
Knight was also a force on defense, leading the team in steals with five, while also snagging two defensive rebounds.
“We tried to execute at the beginning too much and our offense wasn’t working because we didn’t have a vision,” said Knight. “The second-half our minds were a lot clear er.”
Knight enjoys playing at Bedford, despite the tough atmosphere, having friends that play on the other side of the court.
“It feels good to play here,” said Knight. “It makes me so much more competitive because I know so many people here.”
Raiderette coach Thad Streit echoed Knight’s comments on not having a vision in the first-half, but elaborated on the issues he felt held them back.
“We tried to pound it inside and get some high-percentage shots but the first-half I felt we were settling for threes and we were missing some shots and we couldn’t get into our press or play uptempo,” said Streit. “We went with a different lineup and Jaxy gave some much needed energy. Her speed caused some problems and she made some things happen for us and really dictated our second-half.”
Altogether, the Raiderettes shot 28.8 percent on the night, while shooting seven-of-18 from the free-throw line, a stat that coach Streit would like to see improved moving forward.
The Raiderettes recovered 36 rebounds and had 17 steals on the night, along with two blocks.
