Mount Ayr 67,
East Union 35
The Mount Ayr Raiderettes traveled to East Union last Friday night where they improved to 14-3 with a decisive 67-35 victory over the Eagles.
The Eagles kept it close in the first quarter, trailing by two at the buzzer, but a 20 point second quarter helped elevate the Raiderettes into a comfortable spot heading into halftime up 35-21.
The Raiderettes wouldn’t slow down, however, scoring 20 more in the third, while allowing seven, to go up 55-28.
The fourth quarter saw the two teams a little easier matach as the Raiderettes went on to take the win.
Breya Nickle scored 26 in the win, shooting 84.6 percent from the field, including two three, while recording six rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Tabby Henle scored 15 points, making three threes and recording two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Stanton 52,
Mount Ayr 50
It was another barn-burner contest for the Mount Ayr Raiderettes (14-3) as the 17-2 Stanton Viqueens came to town.
The Raiderettes fell behind early as the Viqueens couldn’t get inside so relied on senior Jenna Stephens three-point game to elevate the Viqueens to a 17-8 lead through the first quarter.
The Raiderettes, no stranger to being in a hole early, dug themselves out in the second quarter, outscoring the high-powered Viqueen offense 20-8 to lead Stanton at halftime, 28-25.
It was back-and-forth in the third quarter, with an edge to Stanton, with them leading by one headed into the final eight minutes.
The Raiderettes were led by Tegan Streit, who scored 17 points that included two three-pointers, 15 rebounds and six assists.
Defensively, Breya Nickle recorded all three of the Raiderette blocks, while scoring 12 points.
Unfortunately, the combo just wasn’t enough as the game was tied late and a late free-throw attempt by Stanton put the Viqueens on top by two.
The Raiderettes had two seconds left and the throw-in was snatched out of the air to drop Mount Ayr to a record of 14-4.
“I didn’t think they’d shoot that well from the three point line. We lost their shooters a couple of times while playing zone,” said coach Thad Streit. “We went man-to-man and we played pretty good defense when we got into that second half.”
Throughout January the word coach Streit has found for his team is grit.
“All through January we’ve said these girls have grit,” said Streit. “They were down six with a minute left and we tied it. We missed a bucket here, bucket there and just a couple of things that are shooting us in the foot, but girls are finding ways to put them in a situation to win.”
