Nodaway Valley 50, Mount Ayr 44
The Mount Ayr Raiderette basketball team took to the road January 31 to face the Nodaway Valley Wolverines in their second meeting of the season.
The first meeting between to two saw Nodaway Valley with the 63-47 victory, but this game in Greenfield came down to another final seconds battle.
It was a slow start for both offenses through the first eight minutes of play, scoring only 13 points combined, with the Wolverines having the 9-4 edge.
Between quarters, the Raiderettes switched things up and came out swinging, putting the Wolverines on their heels and leading heading into halftime with timely buckets, from Tabby Henle and Breya Nickle, 25-24.
It was very back-and-forth in the third quarter, as Nodaway Valley saw Izzy Eisbach and Lindsey Davis pushing the Wolverines ahead of Mount Ayr, 36-35.
The final quarter saw much of the same between Mount Ayr who was trying to spoil the Wolverine perfect season and Nodaway Valley who was trying to protect it and secure a Pride of Iowa championship.
With four minutes to go, Nodaway Valley led Mount Ayr 44-39, and looked to be coming back, as Tegan Streit dropped three into the bucket bringing them within two, but the Wolverine’s Davis would add two and then a couple of fouls against Mount Ayr saw the Wolverines extend their lead and win 50-44.
“I thought we were a little mentally fatigued and our legs are probably fatigued from a tight one last night and I wonder what it would’ve been like if we were fresh, without a game Monday,” said coach Thad Streit. “Our girls came out and that was probably our best start in the month of January and we competed and were nose-for-nose and had a lead at halftime and they have a little grit to them and good things can happen. Tough one to lose tonight, but you can’t blame the effort.”

Mount Ayr 59,
Bedford 19
The Mount Ayr Raiderettes hosted the Bedford Bulldogs on senior night last Friday night, in a contest that saw Mount Ayr win 59-19.
The game got out of hand early Friday when the Raiderettes jumped ahead 18-4 after the first quarter.
The Raiderette defense was stingy in the second quarter, allowing only two-points to the Bulldogs.
Mount Ayr would lead by 30-points headed into halftime.
Through the third quarter, the Mount Ayr lead grew, 52-14 and the fourth quarter saw the Raiderette bench get valuable floor time, finishing the contest out with a 59-19 victory over the Bulldogs.
The Raiderette offense was powered by senior Tabby Henle’s 16-points, which saw three three-point shots, in which the team was successful on seven, and Breya Nickle and Tegan Streit each contributed 14-points.
Defensively, Nickle recorded seven rebounds, with nine total, and had a team-high four blocks.
Tegan Streit led the team in steals with six.
“They had some big girls who have been rebounding the ball a lot lately and Linsie [Barnes] was sick so we weren’t sure who was going to rebound but the defense did a nice job of creating turnovers,” said coach Streit. “We had some high-percentage shots and we shot the ball well. It was a good win, and senior night, which is always a nice win.”

Interstate-35 54, Mount Ayr 46
Mount Ayr Raiderettes traveled to Truro to face the Interstate-35 Roadrunners (8-8) on Monday night to close out the regular season.
It was a tough outing for the Raiderettes as they fell to 15-6 to finish the season as the Roadrunner press gave the Raiderettes fits all night.
The Raiderettes kept it close all night, however, ending the first quarter with a three-point deficity, but heading into halftime the gap grew larger, putting Mount Ayr down 27-19.
The second-half saw the Raiderettes trail 40-29 after the third, but a rally in the fourth closed the gap, unfortunately, too late.
The Raiderettes outscored the Roadrunners 17-14 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
The Raiderettes were led by Breya Nickle who shot three-of-four from the arch and scored 20 points on the night, while leading the team in steals with four.
