The Mount Ayr Raiders played their hearts out in a defensive battle at state-ranked Lynnville-Sully last Friday, but fell by one score in overtime, 23-16. The loss takes the Raiders out of the district title conversation, but the Raiders are very much in the postseason conversation.
Mount Ayr will play the last two weeks at home after playing in back-to-back weeks at North Mahska and Lynnville-Sully, their two longest road trips.
This week, the Raiders will play their third state-ranked team this year when Class A No. 7 AC/GC is in town.
The Raiders fell to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the District 6 standings. The Hawks were ranked No. 5 in the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class A rankings last week.
“Lynnville-Sully is very good,” said Mount Ayr football coach Ryan Victor. Victory said that District 6 is so balanced and so good. “That’s the crazy thing about high school football, any team can win. We have six of the seven district teams with over 100 points scored and five with over 130 points scored. We have a lot of balance in our district and have had two teams ranked each week. Even MTSM and North Mahaska and Wayne are solid teams and they have only one-district win,” he said.
The game was close throughout and went to overtime tied at 16. The Hawks, however, scored in overtime and the Raiders did not. That was the difference.
“It was a good high school football game. It’s the second overtime game we have been in this year. You win when you deserve to win and sometimes it’s hard to do that. We have given ourselves that opportunity to win, and sometimes that’s all you can ask for,” said Victor.
The Raiders defense came up big on the Hawks first drive. Lynnville-Sully drove to the Raiders 32-yard line but faced a 3rd and 12. On the play, the Raiders line came up big as Tucker Larson and Dalton Barnes combined to sack quarterback Lucas Sieck to force a punt. The Raiders didn’t have much going offensively in the opening quarter. Lynnville-Sully would score the first points of the game late in the opening quarter with 53 seconds left. A Lannon Montgomery 4-yard run and subsequent two-point conversion run broke a scoreless tie.
Mount Ayr scored their first points with 2:55 left before halftime. Dyson Thompson crossed the goal line with a 35-yard touchdown run to cut the Hawk lead to 8-6. A Jackson Ruggles two-point conversion pass to Louden Main tied the score at 8.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the second half with each scoring once.
Lynnville-Sully scored with 3:20 left in the third quarter on a CJ Nikkel 1-yard run and ensuing Austin Larson two-point conversion run to take a 16-8 lead. Mount Ayr would tie the score at 16 early in the fourth quarter on a Tate Dugan 45-yard touchdown run and Jackson Ruggles two-point conversion run eight seconds into the final quarter.
The game would go to overtime and the Hawks would have the football first.
On the first play in overtime, Hawk quarterback Lucas Sieck ran a play action pass and found Terran Gosselink wide-open for a 10-yard touchdown. The touchdown set the score at 22-16 and Sieck followed with a PAT to set the score at 23-16.
Mount Ayr then got a turn to tie or the game with a two-point conversion. On first down, the Raiders passed, but quarterback Jackson Ruggles fell down, got up, and was hit as he tried to find his receiver in the end zone. The ball was intercepted and the ball game was over.
The Raiders scored the second most points against the Hawks this season and the second most against the Hawks in district play with their 16 points.
Quarterback Jackson Ruggles passed for 53 yards on eight pass completions and rushed for 30 yards on ten carries.

Dyson Thompson led the Raiders in rushing with 108 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. He averaged 9.8 yards a carry. Dyson became the fourth Raider to top the 100-yard rushing mark in a single game this season joining Ruggles, Tyler Martin, and Tate Dugan.
Tyler Martin led Raider receivers with five receptions while Tate Dugan led in receiving yards with 36. Defensively, Dalton Barnes led in tackles with 12 and Tyler Martin was next with ten tackles.
Lucas Sieck passed for 117 yards and a touchdown for the Hawks. Lannon Montgomery and CJ Nikkel each had touchdown runs in the game. Montgomery and Blake Van Wyk each had three receptions to lead Lynnville-Sully. Defensively, the Hawks were led by Jack Bowlin, Dawson James, Nikkel, and Klayton Van Dyke with five tackles each.
The Raiders will be at home for the final two weeks of the regular season.
Mount Ayr will host Class A No. 8 AC/GC on Friday in their final non-district game. It will be the second straight game against a ranked Class A foe. The Chargers come into the game with a 6-0 record and are primarily a running attack team. The Chargers have rushed for over 2,000 yards as a team with 2,112 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns.
Quarterback Jathan South has passed for only 174 yards and two touchdowns on five completions this season. South, however, leads the team in rushing with 733 yards on 72 carries with 11 touchdowns and an 11.2-yard rush average. Senior Anthony Solorzano had rushed for 598 yards on 80 carries with 6 touchdowns. Also, Mike Fuller has rushed for 481 yards and 7 touchdowns and Nate Chance has rushed for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Solorzano is the leading receiver with three receptions for 128 yards and two scores. Defensively, Tegan Slaybaugh leads in tackles with 44.5 and Payton Jacobe has 38 tackles, 5 sacks, and 16 tackles for loss.
