The Mount Ayr softball team will remember their first win of the 2024 season. A 9-inning, 7-6 victory over East Union gave the Raiderettes their first win and a boost going into this week.
The Raiderettes were to play four games last week, but two games were postponed, a road game at Clarke and a home game with POI foe Central Decatur. No word on make-up dates has been announced.
The win came after taking a 5-1 loss in their season opener at Shenandoah earlier in the week.
Mount Ayr broke a scoreless tie game in the bottom of the third inning when they pushed a pair of runs home to take a 2-0 lead.
That lead held until the top of the fifth. There, the Eagles erupted for six runs to grab a 6-2 lead after five innings. A single run by Mount Ayr in the sixth set the score at 6-3, and down to their last at-bat in the seventh, the Raiderettes plated three runs to tie the score at 6-6 to force extra innings.
That 6-6 score stood until the bottom of the ninth when Mount Ayr scored the winning run.
Mount Ayr had 10 hits in the game. Breya Nickle had two hits including her first home run of the season and drove in three runs. Anna Greenland and Keely Wasteney each were 2-for-3 in the game. Janna Irving, Dannie Stewart, Kensie Barnes, and Aubree Clark all had hits in the game. Clark and Stewart each had RBI’s.
East Union had ten hits in the game led by Kayli Shade who was 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored. Kinzey Ripperger had two hits and scored a run while Haley Willett and Quynn Foster each had a hit and drove in two runs. Other hits came from Marlys Mitchell, Gwen Nixon, and Kathryn Lack. Tristin Lear pitched all nine innings in the game and took the loss. Lear struck out six, walked six, and gave up seven runs on eight hits. She faced 41 batters.
The Raiderettes began their season on May 20 at Shenandoah. There, Mount Ayr fell 5-1 to the Mustangs.
Shenandoah scored the first runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Shenandoah added to their lead in the bottom of the third with three runs to take a 5-0 lead. Mount Ayr scored their only run on the game in the top of the fourth to set the score at 5-1. Neither team scored in the final three innings of the game.
Kensie Barnes started and took the loss after working four innings. She struck out one, walked three, and gave up five runs on two hits.
Keely Wasteneny pitched two innings in relief.
Peyton Athen was the winning pitcher after working seven innings of work. She struck out 15 and walked two.
Aubree Clark led Mount Ayr with a single and RBI. Jalyn Akers and MaKel Jones each reached base via walks.
