The Mount Ayr baseball team began their 2024 season with a pair of games last week.
The Raiders opened the year at Shenandoah on May 20 and hosted East Union three nights later for their Pride of Iowa Conference opener.
Both games resulted in losses, but with many games left this summer, the Raiders are sure to see wins coming soon.
The Raiders were to have played four games last week, but a road game at Clarke on Tuesday and another game at home against Central Decatur last Friday were postponed due to weather-related issues. No make-up dates have been announced yet for either ball game.
Three POI games are on the schedule this week with two being road games. Mount Ayr travels to Lenox on Tuesday and is at SW Valley two nights later in the first of two games with each team this summer. The Raiders finish the week with a home game with Bedford on May 31.
Mount Ayr lost 14-4 at Shenandoah to open the season on Monday, May 20 in five innings.
The Mustangs took control of the game with four runs in the bottom of the first and three runs in the bottom of the second for a 7-0 lead.
Mount Ayr scored half of their runs in the game in the top of the third inning to trim the Mustang lead to 7-2 after three innings.
Hayes Stogdill got the first Raiders hit and Adler Reed walked, giving the Raiders two on base. Rowan Sackett drove both in with the Raider’s second hit of the game.
Shenandoah put up three more runs in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. Mount Ayr scored twice in the fifth to set the score at 10-5, but another big inning by the Mustangs in the fifth gave them a 10-run lead, ending the game early by the 10-run mercy rule.
Dylan Graham started and took the loss after working two and two-thirds innings. Graham struck out four, walked two, and gave up seven runs, none of which were earned, on six hits.
Drew Graham and Tyler Still each pitched in the game in relief.
Mount Ayr had five hits in the game. Fleharty was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Rowan Sackett had a hit and two RBI’s. Trevin Victor and Hayes Stogdill each had hits in the game.
The Raiders hosted East Union on May 23 to fall to 0-2.
East Union scored two runs in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead. The Raiders tied the game with runs in the bottom of the third and fifth innings to tie the game at 2-2.
East Union would take control of the game with a three-run top of the sixth inning.
The win was the first for East Union in three games. The win by East Union was the first time they have beaten Mount Ayr in the last 23 meetings between the two schools.
Mount Ayr scored their first run in the third inning when Rowan Sackett doubled in Preston Fleharty who reached on a one-out single. The Raiders also had runners at second and third in the fourth after walks by Dylan Graham and Trevin Victor with one out. East Union would get Tyler Still to fly out and Adler Reed to strike out to get out of the threat.
The Raiders would only get one more base runner on base in the final two innings.
Preston Flehartey led Mount Ayr with a single, double, and two runs scored. Rowan Sackett also had a single and double in the game.
