Raiders pick up first two wins of the season

The Mount Ayr baseball team went 2-1 in three games last week, earning their first two wins this year.
Both were Pride of Iowa Conference wins with one on the road and the other at home. Two of the games were one-run finishes as well.
The Raiders improved to 2-3 in their first five games.
Mount Ayr will play a four-game week which started Monday, June 3 at home against Murray. The Raiders played at Wayne on Tuesday and host Central Decatur and Nodaway Valley on Wednesday and Friday. All those game results can be found in next week’s Record News.
Mount Ayr started their three-game week with an 11-1 loss at Lenox in five innings.
The Raiders struggled to get offense going against the Tigers in the game. Lenox scored first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Mount Ayr scored their only run in the top of the third. Lenox ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when they batted around in their order and scored eight runs.
Mount Ayr had only three hits in the game from three different players. Hayes Stogdill had a double while Dylan Graham and Adler Reed each had singles. Mount Ayr batters were issued four walks in the game. Trevin Victor had two walks while Jaize Frost and Graham each had one walk.
Graham started and took the loss after giving up three runs in three innings. He gave up three hits and walked three batters. Preston Fleharty, Jaxsen Walter, and Tyler Still all pitched in relief for Mount Ayr.
Brogan Petersen and Brody Brokaw led Lenox with a hit and each drove in a pair of runs. Carter Reed was the winning pitcher after working five innings, striking out four and giving up one run.
On Thursday, May 30 the Raiders picked up a 4-3 win at SW Valley in a close ball game.
The Raiders scored first with a run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. SW Valley took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third. The Raiders answered in the top of the fourth, scoring twice to take a 3-2 lead. SW Valley tied the game in the fifth and the Raiders took the lead with a run in the top of the sixth.
The loss by the Timberwolves set their record at 3-5 as they were looking to reach the .500 mark with a win over Mount Ayr.
The win was the first of the season for the Raiders after starting the 2024 season 0-3.
Mount Ayr had nine hits in the game led by Jaxsen Walter who was 3-for-4 with three singles. Jaize Frost was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Preston Fleharty was 2-for-4 with two singles, 2 RBI’s, and a run scored. Dylan Graham, Tate Dugan each had hits and each had an RBI in the game. Trevin Victor pitched a complete game for the win. Victor struck out seven, walked two, and gave up three runs on five hits. He faced 28 batters.
The Raiders won their second game in a row when they beat Bedford at home last Friday, 7-6.
Each team scored a run in the first inning as the game stayed 1-1 until the top of the third. Bedford pushed three runs home in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Bedford extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Mount Ayr rallied, scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth to set the score at 5-4. Bedford took a 6-4 lead with a run in the sixth, but that gave the Raiders more time to make a comeback. Mount Ayr cut the two-run lead in half with a run in the sixth at 6-5.
The Raiders then won the game, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead.
Mount Ayr had seven hits in the game. Adler Reed was 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI’s and two runs scored. Preston Fleharty, Dylan Graham, Rowan Sackett, Jaxsen Walter, and Hayes Stogdill all had hits for the Raiders. Tate Dugan, Adler Reed, and Dylan Graham all pitched for the Raiders in the game.
Bedford had eight hits in the game led by Silas Walston who was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Cal Peterman took the loss after working six and two-thirds innings. He struck out five, walked five, and gave up seven runs on seven hits.
