The Mount Ayr Raider football team moved to 2-0 with a 27-6 home win over Wayne last Friday. It was the second straight home win for the Raiders. Mount Ayr will hit the road this week for their first game away from Mount Ayr when they travel to Madrid.
The Raiders have won the last six straight against Wayne since the 2008 season. The two teams have played in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, last year, and also this year.
Last Friday’s game was the closest on the scoreboard in any of the previous five meetings.
“Wayne is physical and we had to adjust to that. We had some chances in the red zone but turned it over once and didn’t convert another time. Our defense did a good job stopping the run. Our front seven did a solid job of dictating the line of scrimmage. They were a little one-dimensional after that,” said Mount Ayr coach Ryan Victor.
“We had to earn it (the win). They (Wayne) did a good job of playing sound physical football. We knew that from our game with them last year that they would be physical again. They showed a big improvement last year from week one to week two and that was the same this year too,” said Victor.
Mount Ayr scored the first points of the game in the opening quarter on a 20-yard scoring run by Jackson Ruggles. A Kellon Shaffer kick set the score at 7-0. The Raiders extended their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter after a 28-yard scoring pass to Tate Dugan from Ruggles. Shaffer drilled his second PAT.
The Falcons would cut into the Raiders lead in the second quarter with a Karter Murphy 12-yard touchdown run to put the score at 14-6. The 2-point conversion pass by Karter Murphy was no good. The 8-point margin would stand for the Raiders at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Raiders added touchdowns in each of the quarters to take control of the game. A Dyson Thompson 4-yard scoring run in the third and a Ruggles 27-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter along with a pair of Shaffer PAT’s, set the score at its final of 27-6.
The Raiders dominated in the run game, totaling 292 yards on 51 carries for a 5.7-yard average per carry. Three of the four Raider touchdowns came on the ground in the game. Two rushers went over 100 yards in the game. Dyson Thompson led with 146 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Jackson Ruggles also went over 100 rushing yards with 119 yards on 13 carries with two rushing touchdowns.
Tyler Martin and Tate Dugan were held down in yards in the game, combining for 27 yards on 11 carries between the two running backs. Dugan led Raider receivers with three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown while Thompson had two receptions and Trevin Victor one catch.
Ruggles threw for 93 yards on six completions with a touchdown pass.
Defensively, Mount Ayr was led in tackles by Tyler Martin with ten and Jackson Ruggles with 6. Dylan Graham and Ethan Johns each had a fumble recovery in the game.
Wayne had 144 yards of total offense in the game with 81 passing and 63 rushing yards. Falcon quarterback Karter Murphy passed for 81 yards on 9-of-16 attempts but did not have a touchdown pass or an interception. Murphy also led Wayne in rushing with 44 yards on 11 carries and scored the only Falcon touchdown in the game.
Cole Gibson caught a team-high five passes for 45 yards while Lane Ogden and Brennen Sims each had two catches. Murphy led Wayne in tackles with 13 including eight solo stops while Fischer Buckingham had nine tackles and three tackles for loss.
The Raiders now begin the meat of their schedule and this Friday is a big one. The Raiders travel to state-ranked Madrid who is 1-1. Madrid began the season ranked No. 2 in Class A before falling to Woodward-Granger in week one.
“We want to be 1-0 again this week. We have to get better each day and live in the moment. It’s going to be a process and use it to get better. I think our guys are focused on what is right in front of us. Madrid is a different team this year even with guys that they have back. Our guys know that it will come down to how we prepare Monday-Thursday,” said Victor.
Madrid has one of the best players in Class A in senior Preston Wicker. Wicker, an All-State pick last year, missed the first week, but in week two, passed for 126 yards and 4 touchdowns on 5-for-5 completions and added 202 yards rushing on 12 carries and two touchdowns. Wicker had 91 passing and 180 rushing yards in last year’s game with five total touchdowns. Mount Ayr countered with 190 rushing yards with two scores from Dyson Thompson and one each from Jackson Ruggles and Tyler Martin. Then junior Louden Main also had a 72-yard kick-off return for a score in the game.
Four different Tigers have season totals of at least 110 yards rushing and four different Tigers have a rushing touchdown. Three different Tigers have caught a touchdown pass. Juniors Easton Halverson and Terrin Lawrenson lead the Tigers in tackles with 9.5 and 9. Last year, the Tigers beat Mount Ayr 35-34 in the regular season.
