The 2024 district opener for Mount Ayr was a tough one, as they traveled to Class A No. 6 Madrid.
There, the Tigers rushing game was too much for the Raiders to overcome in a 28-6 loss.
The loss was the first of the season for Mount Ayr who fell to 2-1. Madrid improves to 2-1 and has won two straight games after being upset in week one by Woodward-Granger in a close game.
Madrid rushed for 342 yards in the game and had a pair of rushers top the 100-yard mark in the game. Madrid averaged 7.3 yards per rush attempt and controlled the line of scrimmage in the game.
The Tigers scored a touchdown in each of the four quarters of the game to take a 28-0 lead in the fourth quarter.
Mount Ayr scored their only touchdown in the final quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tate Dugan from Jackson Ruggles.
Mount Ayr had 182 yards of total offense with 66 passing and 116 rushing yards. Jackson Ruggles passed for 66 yards on 6-for-10 attempts. He had one touchdown and one interception.
Mount Ayr rushed for 116 yards and averaged 3.3 yards a carry in the game. Tate Dugan led with 57 yards on 13 carries. Dugan also led in receiving with four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Mount Ayr was led in tackles by Tyler Martin with 4.5, Tate Dugan with 5.5, and Garrett Walter with 5. Mount Ayr recovered three fumbles in the game. Martin recovered two and Trevin Victor recovered one. The Raiders also had two interceptions in the game, one each from Victor and another from Martin.
Preston Wicker passed for 20 yards and a touchdown and had two interceptions. Loken Velky caught the only scoring pass in the game. Wicker rushed for 208 yards on 26 carries and had three touchdown runs. Will Atkinson added 100 yards on 13 carries.
Defensively, Madrid was led in tackling by Wicker with 6. The Tigers had three fumble recoveries and Madrid had one interception in the game.
The Raiders will be back in district play this week when they travel to Leon to play Central Decatur. The Cardinals lost to North Mahaska at home last week 69-16 in their district opener. Central Decatur comes into the game with a record of 1-2. The Cardinal’s only win is a 22-6 road win at Nodaway Valley in week 2. Quarterback Asher Norman has passed for 348 yards on 30-of-59 attempts with three touchdown passes. Paxon Applegate is the leading CD rusher with 75 yards on 15 carries. Three Cardinals have caught a touchdown pass this season led by senior Nash Dykes with 16 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Cord Hamilton is the leading tackler with 22.5 while Nolan Pierson has 12 and Wyatt Hamaker 11.5. Dykes is a force in the defensive backfield having already collected four interceptions for 51 return yards and a score. Dykes was an All-State defensive back last season.
