Win 40-6 to set up big game Friday in home finale
The Mount Ayr Raiders flexed their muscles last Friday night at home, winning on homecoming, 40-6 over North Mahaska.
The win gave the Raiders a record of 3-1 in district play and 4-1 overall. With three weeks left in the regular season, the Raiders have a big game Friday night when they play the team they are tied with in the District 6 standings, Lynnville-Sully.
The game will be the last home game of the regular season for Mount Ayr as they will honor their nine seniors on this year’s team.
The winner will have the inside track on finishing as the district runner-up and hosting a playoff game.
“I was happy with how we played. We talked all week about distractions and I thought we played focused for a lot of the game,” said Mount Ayr head coach Ryan Victor.
“It’s not easy to do during homecoming week. We did a good job playing four quarters. It’s supposed to be a fun week, but it is a whole lot more fun when you win on Friday night like we did,” he said.
Madrid is the favorite to win the district title and is unbeaten in district play going into this week. The Tigers still have to play district foes Central Decatur, North Mahaska, and Wayne.
Lynnville-Sully has Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Central Decatur after this week in district play and Mount Ayr will have one more district game remaining, a week 8 game at Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
Mount Ayr scored first in the game with 7:10 left in the first quarter. Jackson Ruggles found Trevin Victor for a 17-yard scoring pass. The touchdown was the first receiving score for Victor this season and gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead.
Mount Ayr took command of the game in the second quarter in taking a 26-6 halftime lead. After North Mahaska tied the game at 6-6 with 10:14 left in the half on a Lucas Nunnikhoven 51-yard pass to Asher DeBoef, the Raiders used three Dyson Thompson scoring runs to extend their lead. Thompson scored on runs of 37, 38, and 29 yards in the second quarter.
Mount Ayr scored the only points in the second half adding a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to set the score at its final of 40-6.
Tate Dugan scored his first rushing touchdown of the season with 6:51 left in the third quarter and Tyler Martin crossed the goal line from 6 yards out with 6:46 left in the game to close the scoring in the game.
The Raiders had 461 yards of total offense in the game with 103 passing and 358 rushing yards. Jackson Ruggles passed for 91 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 85 yards on 14 carriers. Dyson Thompson rushed for 171 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Tyler Martin and Tate Dugan also scored rushing touchdowns. Trevin Victor caught a team high three passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Mount Ayr was led in tackles by Bracken Collier, Rowan Sackett, and Tyler Martin with 5, and Garrett Walter had 4.
“We ran the football and passed the football effectively. We played physical football on defense and really held their running game down. It was a good effort. They guys have really bought in to what we (coaches) have been working on,” said Victor.
North Mahaska’s offense was led by senior quarterback Lucas Nunnikhoven. Nunnikhoven passed for 80 yards and a touchdown on three completions and rushed for 16 yards on eight carries. Gage Ries led the Warhawks in rushing with nine carries for 45 yards. Dylan Meland had two catches for 30 yards to lead New Sharon.
The Raiders will face Lynnville-Sully at home on senior night. The game will be the last home game of the regular season for the Raiders. Mount Ayr travels to AC/GC in week 7 in non-district action and will travel to Martensdale-St. Mary’s in week 8 in their district and regular-season finale. The Raiders and Hawks are fighting for the second seed in the playoffs out of District 6. Mount Ayr is 3-1 in District and Lynnville-Sully is 2-1.
The Hawks have a senior quarterback in Lannon Montgomery who has thrown for 729 yards on 51-of-83 attempts with 6 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 80 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown. The Hawks as a team have rushed for 332 yards on 111 carries, averaging an even 3.0-yards a carry. Sophomore Gavin Fisk is the top Hawk rusher with 177 yards on 51 carries and a touchdown. The Hawks have two star receivers in juniors Jack Bowlin (21-365 yards 3 TD’s), and Matthew Mintle (19-217 yards 3 TD’s). The duo have caught all six of the touchdowns thrown so far this year.
Defensively, Lynnville-Sully is led by Dawson James with 27.5 tackles as well as Gavin Fisk with 26 tackles.
