The favorites to win the Pride of Iowa Conference girl’s title this year made their way to Greenfield to face the Wolverines for their POI and home opener on Tuesday, December 3.
There, the Raiderettes showed why they are picked to win the POI this year, beating Nodaway Valley 65-31. The win was the first for Mount Ayr against Nodaway Valley since January of 2020, a span of nine straight NV victories. The Raiderettes improved to 3-0 and added the NV win to non-conference wins over Clarke and Lamoni.
The Wolverines lead the series between the two schools with a 21-14 record since 2006. Nodaway Valley fell to 0-2 with the loss and 0-1 in the POI.
“It’s been five years since we have won the conference title and we had an emphasis of winning the games last week,” said Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit.
“We took care of business and got off to a good start and that was important. Our rebounding and defense were good,” he said.
The Raiderettes return all five starters from last year. The only other POI school close to that is Lenox who returns four starters from a 13-10 team last year. Nodaway Valley returns one starter from last year.
The first quarter started out to be the best for the Wolverines as the score was 12-6 Mount Ayr with just under three minutes left in the quarter. The Raiderettes led 7-2 with 4:23 left when the Wolverines would cut the lead to four points, 10-6 with 3:04 left.
Once the score was 12-6, both teams struggled to move the score off of it as the offenses for both teams cooled. Nodaway Valley had four chances to cut the lead to under six points, but three missed shots and a pair of turnovers kept the difference at six points. Mount Ayr stopped the nearly two and a half minute scoreless stretch for both teams with an Izzy Gilbertson bucket over a double team to extend the lead to eight, 14-6. That hoop started a 5-0 run to end the quarter with the Raiderettes up 17-6.
The run of Mount Ayr points continued into the second quarter and got to 11-0 and a 23-6 lead before an Eisbach hoop set the score at 23-8, two minutes into the quarter. The Raiderette lead swelled to 18 before NVgot the score to 26-12. Mount Ayr would use another big run to finish the quarter off 17-0 to take command of the game by halftime, 45-12.
Senior forward Breya Nickle had 6 points and Dannie Stewart 4 in the run.
Mount Ayr got a rebound put back from Izzy Gilbertson 20 seconds into the second half to set the score at 47-12 to activate the 35-point running clock.
The Raiderettes would take a 61-21 lead to the final quarter. Nodaway Valley outscored Mount Ayr 10-2 in the final quarter.
Mount Ayr had two players reach double figures led by senior Breya Nickle with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Sophomore Izzy Gilbertson had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Three others, Jaylee Shaffer, Dannie Stewart and Jaxy Knight all had eight points. The Raiderettes only had four of their 65 points from bench players. Mount Ayr had 41 rebounds, 17 steals, and 17 assists in the game.
The two teams meet again in Mount Ayr on January 14.
