Using 30 years’ worth of publicly available historical weather data from Weather Spark, Deye (deye.com) set out to quantify the (statistically) dreariest day of the year in each state. By analyzing key factors—temperature, and cloud cover – they were able to determine which single day in 2025 is most likely to be the ‘gloomiest’ for Iowans. And the good news is that day has now passed! Saturday, January 11th, 2025, was statistically set to be the gloomiest day of the year in Iowa.
How Was the Gloomiest Day Calculated?
Rather than simply choosing the coldest day of the year or the darkest, the methodology took a more comprehensive approach. Here’s how the gloomiest day was determined:
Coldest Day: A day when temperatures are statistically at their lowest, typically marked by bitter cold and increased reliance on heating. Historically, Iowa’s coldest day in January falls around January 1st, with an average low of 32°F.
Cloudiest Day: Days with the highest percentage of cloud cover, reducing natural sunlight and making outdoor conditions feel even more dreary. According to past data, January 21st historically ranks as the cloudiest day in Iowa.
Overall Gloom: The team combined the lowest temperatures and cloudiest conditions, averaging these dates to determine when Iowans are most likely to experience peak seasonal gloom.
What Does This Mean for Iowans?
While winter enthusiasts may embrace the season, January 11th was likely to be the day where most Iowans would have rather stayed indoors. With a historical track record of icy temperatures, thick cloud cover, and the general sluggishness of midwinter, it’s the perfect storm for seasonal blues.

So, what can Iowans do to combat the continuing cold and dark days of winter?
