Mount Ayr student eligible for Math Stars program
A third-grader at Mount Ayr Elementary has been recognized by an exclusive mentoring program for her achievement in mathematics.
Jovie Jerome, daughter of Karl Jerome and Regan Main, scored in the top two percent of all third grade students in mathematics in the most recent Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress.
As a result, Jovie has been invited to apply for participation in the National Math Stars program.
According to its website, Math Stars is “a 10-year, fully funded program that supports and inspires our Stars’ love of mathematics from as early as third grade through the end of high school.”
Over those 10 years, Math Stars invests more than $100,000 in each Star to support and provide resources to pave the way “to reach the frontiers of mathematics, science, and technology.”
The program is entirely free to students and their families.
The Math Stars program provides weekly small‐group math mentoring, accelerated coursework and enrichment resources, fully funded STEM summer‐camp scholarships, and personalized family advising and community events
Most Math Stars spend 3-5 hours per week on core program activities.
Only students who are residents of Iowa, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, or Wisconsin are eligible to apply to the Math Stars program.
Acceptance into Math Stars is a rigorous process.
In late June, all applicants will be asked to complete an online problem-solving assessment.
Based on that assessment, finalists will take a proctored examination and complete student and parent interviews in July.
Students will be notified in mid-August on their acceptance into the Math Stars program.
