The Mount Ayr baseball team has kept pace with the leaders in the Pride of Iowa Conference heading into this week.
The Raiders are in second place in the POI going into the week a half-game back from Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Lenox who were tied in the lead with one loss each.
The Raiders beat three of the four foes they faced last week. Mount Ayr beat Murray 18-5 on Monday, June 9 then beat SW Valley 12-6, and Wayne 11-0. The lone loss was to state ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s 13-3.
The Raiders hosted Central Decatur on Monday, June 16 before they traveled to Nodaway Valley on Tuesday. The Raiders play at home Thursday against SE Warren.
The week started with a bang as the Raiders beat Murray in a non-conference game at Murray. The win was the fourth straight for Mount Ayr and set a new season high in runs scored with the 18-5 win. The win was also the second non-conference win this year for Mount Ayr, who also beat Clarke recently.
The next non-conference game for the Raiders is scheduled for June 25 at Bedford.
Rowan Sackett got the win and went four innings in the game. Sackett struck out three, walked four and gave up two runs on two hits. He faced 18 batters. Tyler Still also pitched in the game, an inning in relief and faced six batters.
Mount Ayr had ten hits in the game led by Sackett who was 4-for-4 with two doubles, 7 RBI’s and two runs scored.
The only loss of the week in four games was to state ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s 13-3. The Raiders trailed 8-0 before scoring their first runs in a three-run third. The Blue Devils answered the three Raider runs in the third with two of their own to take a 10-3 lead after three innings.
The Raiders had eight hits in the game with three players collecting multi-hit games. Hayes Stogdill, Tate Dugan, and Avery Wolfe all had two hits. Dugan and Wolfe each had RBI’s as did Drew Graham. Jaxsen Walter and Trevin Victor also had hits in the game.
The Raiders used three pitchers in the game. Tyler Still took the loss after working two and a third innings. He gave up three runs on one hit and struck out one batter. Hayes Stogdill and Drew Graham also pitched in the game. The two teams play again on June 27 in Mount Ayr for the Raiders senior night.
Mount Ayr rebounded from a lost to Martensdale-St. Mary’s on Thursday, June 12 with a 12-6 win over SW Valley. The Raiders trailed 2-0 going to the third inning when they scored eight runs to take control of the game.
Tyler Still was 2-for-4 with a RBI, walk and two runs scored to lead the Raiders. Tytan Gourley had a double and drove in four runs while Trevin Victor had a hit and 2 RBI’s. Other Mount Ayr hits were from Adler Reed, Rowan Sackett, and Jaxsen Walter. Reed and Walter each had RBI’s.
Walter started pitching and went six innings to get the win. Walter struck out six, and gave up six runs on six hits. Tate Dugan pitched the final inning in relief and struck out three batters.
The week ended with a big win at home over the Wayne Falcons, 11-0. The two teams will play again in Corydon on July 1. The Raiders took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control. Mount Ayr scored a run in the fourth to get the score to 11-0. The game ended in the fifth after the Falcons could not score a run to keep the game going.
Senior Trevin Victor pitched a two-hit shutout and faced 20 batters. He struck out four, walked three and needed only 65 pitches in the game. Mount Ayr had nine hits in the game led by Hayes Stogdill who was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, and three runs scored. Rowan Sackett added a pair of doubles in three at-bats and 2 RBI’s. Other Raider hits were from Adler Reed, Jaxsen Walter, Tate Dugan, and Tytan Gourley. Reed, Walter, and Dugan all had RBI’s.
