Three wins in four games for the Mount Ayr softball team saw the Raiderettes even their record to 7-7 last week. The Raiderettes beat East Union at home, Nodaway Valley in Greenfield, and Central Decatur at home.
The Raiderettes fell to Class 1A No. 5 SE Warren. Mount Ayr is currently in fourth place in the Pride of Iowa Conference with a record of 6-5. Mount Ayr is 7-7 going into this week overall.
“There’s some excitement with where we are in the POI and being tied, our goal has been to be in the top of the conference. We know each night is a fight no matter who we play, we know we got to show up and compete to the best of our ability,” said Raiderette coach Sara Holmes.
“We knew when we lost to NV that first time we needed to get that win back when we went there, and we did. We are still a young team and we’ve lost some games we shouldn’t have and won some tough games which gave the girls confidence that they can do anything,” said Holmes.
The week opened with an 11-6 win at home. East Union nearly beat Mount Ayr at home in their second game of the year, 8-7, on May 27.
Mount Ayr took a 6-0 lead after two innings with three runs in each of the first two innings. If you take those runs out, the Eagles outscored Mount Ayr 6-5 the rest of the way. East Union scored their first run in the top of the third, but trailed 8-1 after three innings.
Mount Ayr had ten hits in the game with three players collecting multi-hit games. Breya Nickle was 3-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI’s, and two runs. Emma Reynolds had two hits including a double and two runs scored and Adalynn Dredge had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Other hits were from Tatum Friedrich, Keely Wasteney, and Kensie Barnes.
Wasteney earned the pitching win after working all seven innings. Wasteney struck out eight, walked four and faced 35 batters.
East Union had a dozen hits in the game including two hits from five of their first six batters in their order. Quynn Foster, Marissa Cass, Kaylie Shade, Tristin Lear, and Kate Gennaro each had two hits and combined to drive in five of the six Eagle runs. Other hits came from Kaelee Buffington and Cheyenne Dike. Kayli Shade hit a home run in the game and Foster and Lear each had a stolen base. Lear pitched the whole game with a six-inning effort. Lear struck out three, walked three and gave up 11 runs on ten hits. She faced 30 batters.
The next night, Mount Ayr made the trip to Greenfield to play Nodaway Valley for the second time this season. The result was a 9-6 win.
Neither team scored in the first inning, but both teams had runners reach scoring position in their half of the inning.
Mount Ayr scored first with a run in the top of the second inning when Dannie Stewart scored on a Wolverine error. Nodaway Valley scored three times in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Each team scored a run in the third inning as the score stood at 4-2 after three innings. Neither team scored in the fourth. Over the next two innings, Mount Ayr outscored Nodaway Valley 6-1 to take an 8-5 lead. Mount Ayr batted around in the top of the fifth and scored four runs and sent six batters to the plate in the sixth and scored twice.
Mount Ayr had five hits and had five different players drive in a run.
Emma Reynolds was 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. Other hits were from Tatum Friedrich, Keeley Wasteney, and Kensie Barnes. Breya Nickle had 2 RBI’s and walked twice while Anna Greenland, Wasteney, Stewart each had an RBI.
Kensie Barnes was the winning pitcher with seven innings of work where she struck out two, walked two and faced 35 batters.
The Wolverines were led by Emma Boswell with a pair of home runs and two RBI’s. She also scored two runs and reached base by a walk and an error. Other hits came from Taylor Laughery, Lea Stonebraker, Ella Boswell, and Chloe Rardin. Mattison Thompson, Carter Osborne, and Caroline Britten each had RBI’s in the game.
Ella Boswell took the loss after working seven innings. Boswell struck out eight, walked six and gave up nine runs on four hits.
Mount Ayr hosted SE Warren on June 19 and lost 13-2. SE Warren had three innings with three or more runs scored in the game. Keely Wasteney started and took the loss after giving up nine runs on 12 hits in four and two-thirds innings. She struck out two and walked four. Kensie Barnes pitched the final two and a third innings. The War Hawks had 45 at bats in the game. Mount Ayr had four hits, two from Breya Nickle and one each for Wasteney and Barnes. Nickel had an RBI while Anna Greenland and Emma Reynolds each reached base on errors.
The last game of the week saw Mount Ayr beat Central Decatur 9-6. The game was a makeup from the weather out on June 3 in Leon. The two teams were supposed to play in Leon on June 11, but the weather caused a postponement.
Mount Ayr scored four runs in the first inning to take control 4-0. Single runs in the second and fourth innings gave the Raiderettes a 6-0 lead. CD scored twice int he top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2, but another run in the fifth and two in the sixth gave Mount Ayr their biggest lead at 9-2.
Kensie Barnes won her second straight start facing 34 batters, striking out four, walking no one and giving up six runs on 11 hits. Mount Ayr had nine hits led by Anna Greenland and Keely Wasteney each with two hits. Other hits came from Emma Reynolds, Tatum Friedrich, MaKel Jones, Breya Nickle and Barnes.
Central Decatur had 11 hits led by Addy Schreck and Piper Helton with two hits each. Aubrey Schreck took the loss after working five and two-thirds innings. She struck out eight, walked three and faced 26 batters. Morgan Havllik also pitched.
