The Mount Ayr Raiderettes won an improbable game on July 3 in Lenox last week.
The Tigers are a dangerous team and are a sneaky pick to make a run at the state tournament in Class 1A. The game between the two schools was originally scheduled to be played on June 26, but was postponed due to weather.
In the game, Mount Ayr out-hit Lenox 8 to 5. Both teams however combined to have 5 errors.
Mount Ayr collected eight hits in the game. Dannie Stewart was 2-for-4 and Emma Reynolds, Adalynn Dredge, MaKel Jones, and Breya Nickle all had hits and a RBI. Other hits were from Tatum Friedrich and Keely Wasteney. Six different Raiderettes reached base via walks. Keely Wasteeney was the winning pitcher after working seven innings. She struck out five, walked five and faced 34 batters.
Lenox had five hits in the game led by Zoey Reed who was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a pair of runs scored while Jaelynn Christensen had a double and a pair of RBI’s.
Mount Ayr struck first with a run in the top of the first when Emma Reynolds led off the game with a solo home run for a 1-0 Mount Ayr lead. Lenox tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first. Mount Ayr would take a 3-1 lead after a RBI double by MaKel Jones that scored Dannie Stewart, an Adalynn Dredge RBI single scoring Jones. Another run in the top of the third gave Mount Ayr a 4-1 lead. By the end of the fifth inning, Lenox had tied the score at 4-4. In the top of the sixth, Mount Ayr pulled ahead, scoring a pair of runs to take a 6-4 lead. A bases-loaded walk to Anna Greenland scored MaKel Jones for an RBI. Breya Nickle then singled in Dredge for the second run of the inning.
Mount Ayr scored again in the top of the seventh inning, to take a 7-4 lead. That extra run came in handy because Lenox pushed two runs home in the bottom of the seventh to get the score to 7-6, but the Tigers could get no closer.
The Raiderettes traveled to Wayne on July 1st to play the top ranked team in Class 1A. The Falcons beat Mount Ayr 11-0 back on June 13. Last week, the Falcons would take an 8-0 win over the Raiderettes to sweep the season series between the two schools.
The Falcons scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. One more run scored in the third to give Wayne a 4-0 lead. The Falcons took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four runs to get the score to 8-0. The Raiderettes could not get a run home in the top of the fifth to keep the game going as the game was called due to the 8-run mercy run rule. The win was the 19th for Wayne while Mount Ayr fell to 8-9 overall.
The Raiderettes struggled against Falcon senior pitcher Izzie Moore. Moore pitched a perfect game, facing 16 Mount Ayr batters over five innings. Moore struck out 11 of those 16 batters. Wayne had two players with multi-hit games as part of a nine-hit attack in the game.
