The Mount Ayr boys basketball team has opened its season with two straight victories in the early going with one of its players reaching a personal milestone. The Raiders defeated Nodaway Valley 69-48 on the road in Greenfield last Tuesday, while senior Jackson Ruggles reached the 1,000 career points mark in the victory.
Mount Ayr jumped out to a 21-8 first quarter lead and matched the offensive production, plus one in the second quarter for a 43-24 halftime lead. The lead would continue to swell in the second half as the Raiders cruised to the 25-point win.
Ruggles led the team in scoring with 21 points, while dishing out four assists and pulling down five rebounds. Fellow senior Tate Dugan had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Hayes Stodgill added 15 points and four rebounds. Adler Reed had nine points.
Last Friday, the Raiders who trailed early against host Martensdale-St. Mary’s, came back and held on for the 40-38 victory in Martensdale.
Trailing 12-4 after the first quarter, Mount Ayr outscored the Blue Devils 17-3 to take a 21-15 lead at halftime. The Blue Devils would briefly retake the lead, but the Raiders would come right back and hold off a late flurry for the win.
Ruggles led all scorers with 20 points, while also having nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Dugan had six points, 10 rebounds and three blocks while Reed pulled down seven rebounds.
Mount Ayr hosted Southwest Valley on Tuesday (results were not available as of press time). The Raiders travel to Bedford on Thursday and host Southeast Warren on Friday.
