KELLERTON, Iowa — A home was destroyed by fire late last Friday morning south of Kellerton.
The fire was reported at at approximately 10:30 a.m. on March 27 at the single family home of Ryan Thompson located at 2669 County Road P64. No one was home when the fire began and fire departments from across Ringgold County, and from as far away as Diagonal and Ellston responded as crews battled the blaze for over two hours before bringing it under control.
The home appears to be a total loss as the fire caused the farm house to collapse. Although no one was inside of the residence, Thompson indicated an indoor cat was unaccounted for at the scene.
This part of Ringgold County is made up of family farms and cattle ranches that dominate the landscapes. Generations of agriculture businesses dot the hillsides while retaining their reasonable distances from the communities of Kellerton and Mount Ayr.
While it’s too early to determine the cause of the fire, those on hand believe it may have started in the rear corner of the home where the kitchen was located.
Emergency Management Director Melissa Stark was on hand gathering critical information so her department might help coordinate any assistance that will be needed in the coming weeks for Thompson and his family.
No additional information was available as of press time.
