ROBERT GALEN MCVEY
Robert Galen McVey, seventh child of 11 children born to Charlie O. and Cora M. (Kimmel) McVey, was born April 21, 1939 at home in Clarke County, IA. Bob always liked the idea that he was “7 of 11” so naturally, 7 and 11 were his lucky numbers!
Bob was united in marriage to LaVonne Groves on November 24, 1956. To this union, three children were born: Pamela Gail, Galen Lee and Georgeanna Marie.
Bob lived for the next several years in Polk and Warren County. He was a skilled carpenter and contractor who took great pride in his work. In addition to the normal carpentry work, he also bought, remodeled and sold a few homes over the years. Bob built new homes for him and LaVonne and for his parents. Bob was a hard worker and he enjoyed the country life, living on his in-law’s farm. He was very family oriented and enjoyed family reunions and get-togethers. LaVonne passed away on November 13, 1988.
On September 2, 1994, Bob married Clara Ayres at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Bob moved to Mount Ayr where he lived the remainder of his life. Bob liked to say that when he married Clara, he got two “bonus daughters”: Deb and Pam. They gave Bob the nickname of “Pops” and “Bobert”. Together with bonus daughter Deb, Bob and Clara took small trips and had adventures together. Bob loved westerns and old country music. He was one of the several McVey kids that was a “self-taught” musician and would get together for jam sessions with them. Bob liked to fish and spend time with family.
Bob passed away on August 18, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVonne; son, Galen McVey; son-in-law, Rick McVey; granddaughter, Susan McVey; and siblings, Eldon McVey, Chuck (Dorothy) McVey, Norma Jean (Merrill) Burr, Carmen (Dean) Neer and Gary McVey.
