Two Games, Two Wins For Mount Ayr Softball Team

MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Raiderettes softball team picked up two wins in three days last week before playing in the Murray Tournament last weekend. Mount Ayr beat Lamoni 7-5 and Lenox 10-5 to improve to 4-2 in six games.
The Raiderettes would beat Lamoni 7-5 after leading the entire game in the first of two games. Lamoni got a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning, but could not score. In the bottom of the first, Mount Ayr sent eight batters to the plate and scored three times on five hits including a pair of doubles.
Lamoni scored its first runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead Raiderette lead 3-2. Each team traded runs with Mount Ayr leading 4-3.
Mount Ayr scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and a single run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-3. Lamoni made one last effort, scoring a pair of runs with one out.
Keeley Wasteney was the winning pitcher after seven innings of work as she struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
Each team had 11 hits in the game.
Mount Ayr was led by three players with multi-hit games. They were Emma Reynolds, Kensie Barnes and Tatum Fredrich each with two hits.
The second game was a 10-5 win over Pride of Iowa Conference foe Lenox on Friday, June 5. The Raiderettes got on the board in the top of the first inning after Keely Wasteney hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Emma Reynolds. Later an error scored two runs in Dannie Stewart and Kensie Barnes for a 3-0 Mount Ayr lead. Lenox cut into Mount Ayr’s lead in the second inning with two runs to get the score to 3-2.
Mount Ayr scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning. An RBI double by Alba Friedrich scored Tatum Friedrich. Alba Friedrich scored on a sac fly by Stewart and Reynolds scored on a Wasteney double for the runs in the inning.
Lenox pushed home two runs in the fourth to cut Mount Ayr’s lead to 7-4. Mount Ayr, however, would extend its lead out to 10-4 with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Lenox added the final run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
Wasteney was the winning pitcher after pitching a complete game. She struck out five, didn’t walk a batter and gave up five runs on eight hits.
Mount Ayr had nine hits with three players having mulit-hit games. Alba Friedrich was 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Makel Jones and Stewart each had two hits. Jones had two RBI and Stewart had an RBI. Other hits were from Wasteney and Tatum Friedrich.
