MOUNT AYR, Iowa — It was a strange but good week for the Mount Ayr softball team as they had two games played against state ranked teams, and two games wiped out due to weather.
Mount Ayr was to play Murray on Monday, June 8 and play SW Valley on June 11 at home, only to see those two games get wiped out due to stormy weather. The two games played were against 9th ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s and 13th ranked Wayne. The result was an upset over MTSM and a loss to Wayne.
Mount Ayr is tied for third place in the Pride of Iowa Conference with a 4-2 record. The Raiderettes are tied with Martensdale-St. Marys. The Blue Devils fell to No. 12 after the loss to Mount Ayr in the latest Class 1A rankings.
Mount Ayr won their second game in a row and their second POI game in a row with a 5-2 upset win over Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
Martensdale-St. Marys scored their only two runs in the top of the third inning for an early MTSM 2-0 lead.
Mount Ayr scored the first of their five runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Dannie Stewart, scoring Emma Reynolds. Reynolds got into scoring position after stealing second base. That run cut the Blue Devils lead in half at 2-1 after three innings.
The Raiderettes would tie the game and take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI single by Stewart scored Alba Friedrich to tie the game at 2-2. Later, Payton Worthington was issued a bases-loaded walk, scoring Stewart to give Mount Ayr its first lead at 3-2.
The Raiderettes put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kensie Barnes hit a two-run double scoring Reynolds and MaKel Jones to get the score to its final of 5-2.
Mount Ayr’s Keeley Wasteney was the winning pitcher in the game, going seven innings. She struck out one, walked one and gave up two runs on 10 hits.
The Raiderettes had seven hits in the game with two players with multi-hit games. Reynolds and Stewart each had two hits. Stewart had two RBI. Barnes had a hit, two RBI and a walk. Other Mount Ayr hits were from Wasteney and Tatum Friedrich. Worthington had the other Mount Ayr RBI.
Against the Falcons, Wayne won 9-1 and out-hit Mount Ayr 9 to 2.
Mount Ayr had two hits with Emma Reynolds and Dannie Stewart each having a hit. Kensie Barnes had an RBI and Makel Jones had two walks while Reynolds and Alba Friedrich each had walks. Keeley Wasteney was the winning pitcher after working four innings. She struck out two and gave up nine runs on nine hits.
Mount Ayr played at East Union on Monday and hosted Nodaway Valley on Tuesday. The Raiderettes will play at SE Warren on Thursday before going to Moravia on Saturday for the Lady MoHawk Softball Classic.
