LYDDIA EVANS WRIGHT

MRS. C. L. WRIGHT DIED AT HER HOME IN MOUNT AYR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1901, FROM HEART FAILURE RESULTING FROM A LONG SEVERE ATTACK OF LA GRIPPE.  SHE WAS AWARE OF THE GREAT PERIL OF HER CONDITION FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE HER DEATH AND ALTHOUGH SUFFERING ALMOST CONSTANTLY, SHE BORE ALL WITH CHRISTIAN FORTITUDE.  WHEN THE STREAM OF LIFE WAS EBBING VERY LOW SHE SHARED HER SCANTY BREATH IN LOVING ADMONITIONS TO HER HUSBAND AND CHILDREN TO LIVE FOR GOD.  SHE WAS BORN IN MONONGAHELA COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, MARCH 16, 1842, HER MAIDEN NAME BEING LYDDIA EVANS.  IN HER EARLY CHILDHOOD SHE WAS CONVERTED AND JOINED THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, REMAINING A FAITHFUL AND CONSISTENT MEMBER ALL HER LIFE.  IN 1859 SHE WAS MARRIED TO CORBLY L. WRIGHT, AND THIS UNION WAS BLESSED WITH EIGHT CHILDREN, SEVEN SONS AND ONE DAUGHTER, ALL OF WHOM WITH THE FATHER SURVIVE HER, EXCEPT THE SECOND SON WHO DIED ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO.  SHE BEGAN HER MARRIED LIFE IN WEST VIRGINIA AND FOR THIRTY-FIVE YEARS SHE LABORED WITH HER HUSBAND TO CARVE OUT A HOME FROM THE ALMOST UNBROKEN FOREST, AND TO BRING UP HER CHILDREN TO STRONG, EDUCATED AND CHRISTIAN MANHOOD AND WOMANHOOD.  INSPIRED BY THE HELPFUL SPIRIT OF THE PIONEER AND THE LOVING KINDNESS OF A SERVANT OF GOD, SHE WAS A WELCOME GUEST AT THE BEDSIDE OF THE SICK AND THE DYING, AND HER HOME WAS OPEN TO ALL WHO SOUGHT HER COUNSEL AND HOSPITALITY.  IN 1893 SHE MOVED TO MOUNT AYR TO BE NEAR HER CHILDREN, MOST OF WHOM HAD SETTLED IN IOWA.  SHE SUFFERED MUCH IN HER LAST DAYS, BUT NEVER WAVERED IN HER FAITH THAT GOD HAD PREPARED FOR HER A MANSION IN THE SKIES.  THE FUNERAL SERVICES WERE CONDUCTED THURSDAY AT 3 O’CLOCK FROM THE BAPTIST CHURCH BY HER PASTOR REV. PVD VEDDER, AND THE INTERMENT WAS MADE IN ROSE HILL CEMETERY.
