MARY JANE POLLOCK NICHOL

MARY JANE POLLOCK, DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. JOHN POLLOCK, WAS BORN IN OHIO ON MARCH 3, 1832 AND DIED AT HER HOME IN MOUNT AYR MARCH 23, 1919, AGED 87 YEARS AND 20 DAYS.

WHEN SHE WAS FOUR YEARS OLD HER PARENTS MOVED TO WARREN COUNTY, IL., MAKING THEIR HOME NEAR MONMOUTH.  HERE MRS. NICHOL GREW TO WOMANHOOD.  FOR HER HIGHER EDUCATION SHE ATTENDED SCHOOL IN GALEBURG, IL., AND AFTERWARDS TAUGHT IN THE RURAL SCHOOLS.  FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF HER CHILDREN IN MEETING THE HARDSHIPS OF LIFE SHE WOULD FREQUENTLY RELATE INCIDENTS WHICH OCCURRED IN  BOARDING AROUND.

ON NOVEMBER 17, 1853, SHE WAS MARRIED TO JOHN NICHOL OF CEDARVILLE, OH.  THEY MADE THEIR HOME IN WARREN COUNTY, IL., UNTIL THE FALL OF 1879 WHEN THE FAMILY CAME TO THEIR FARM ONE AND ONE-HALF MILES NORTH OF MOUNT AYR.  THIS WAS THE FAMILY HOME UNTIL THE DEATH OF MR. NICHOL ON JANUARY 4, 1903. EVER SINCE MRS. NICHOL HAS LIVED IN MOUNT AYR.

IN EARLY LIFE MRS. NICHOL ACCEPTED THE LORD JESUS AS HER SAVIOR, ENTERING THE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND THROUGH A LONG LIFE ADORNING HER CONFESSION BY A FAITHFUL WALK AND CONVERSATION.  SHE HAS BEEN IN THE FELLOWSHIP OF THIS CHURCH FOR FORTY YEARS.  IT HAS BEEN INSPIRING TO ALL OF US TO SEE THE PLEASURE MRS. NICHOL HAS ALWAYS TAKEN IN THE SERVICES OF THE CHURCH, ATTENDING AT COST OF GREAT PHYSICAL EXERTION IN HER OLD AGE.  IT IS BUT A FEW SABBATHS SINCE SHE WAS PRESENT AT A MORNING SERVICE.

MRS. NICHOL IS SURVIVED BY ONE SISTER, MRS. CARRIE E. GRAY, OF MISSOULA, MONTANA.  OF HER CHILDREN, A DAUGHTER DIED IN INFANCY AND A SON, DAYTON, WAS CALLED AWAY IN EARLY MANHOOD.  OF FOUR SONS AND TWO DAUGHTERS WHO SURVIVE THEIR MOTHER, MRS. RUTH CARMICHAEL, MR. W.G. NICHOL AND MISS FANNIE LIVED IN THE HOME WITH THEIR MOTHER.  MR. M.O. NICHOL RESIDES AT GARDEN GROVE; MR. J. P. NICHOL AT CRESTON AND MR. C.V. NICHOL AT CLARINDA.  THERE ARE TEN GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.

  THE FUNERAL WAS HELD SATURDAY AFTERNOON FROM THE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, CONDUCTED BY HER PASTOR, REV. ROBERT L. WELCH, AND THE INTERMENT WAS IN ROSE HILL CEMETERY.
