Samantha Jane Jarvis Uglow (January 26, 1874-March 30, 1929)

Samantha Jane Jarvis, daughter of Philip and Anna Jarvis, was born near Benton, Iowa, January 26, 1874, and departed this life at her home northwest of Benton, March 30, 1929, at the age of 55 years, two months and four days.

She was united in marriage to John C. Uglow January 26, 1893 and to this union were born nine children, two of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Uglow was resided in this part of Ringgold County, where she was born, practically near her entire life and her many friends and neighbors bear witness of her upright character and deeds of help and kindness. She was a kind and loving mother, always going out of her way to lend help and assistance to her children. Mr. Uglow died February 18, 1918.

Mrs. Uglow was of a quiet and retiring nature, but was also ready in her quiet way to carry her share of the burden and lend a hand of true fellowship wherever and whenever it fell to her lot to assist. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Benton in her early girlhood, later transferring her membership to the Grant Center Church where it remained until the disbanding of the church when it was transferred to the Diagonal Methodist Church.

Mrs. Uglow leaves to mourn her passing seven children, Floyde of Clearfield, Mrs. Elsie Bentley of Diagonal, John L. and Mrs. Ruth Trullinger of Scotts Bluff, NE., Mrs. Mary Larson, Leonard and Cicil at home. Besides these children she leaves three brothers and three sisters, namely: Mrs. Rebecca England of Ellandale, N.D., Mrs. Pheobe Navenberg, of Cedar Rapids, NE. and Miss Margaruite Jarvis of Merna, NE., Levi and John Jarvis of Cedar Rapids, NE., Mrs. Katherine Stephens of Delphos, Iowa. Mrs. Uglow also leaves ten grandchildren besides a host of friends in the community to mourn her death.

Funeral services were conducted from the home three and a half miles northwest of Benton on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. J.E. Mathany, pastor of the Diagonal M.E. Church officiating, and interment was made at Bethel Cemetery southwest of Diagonal.
