VIOLA SHAWLER NICKLES

VIOLA, DAUGHTER OF RICHARD AND ELIZABETH SHAWLER, WAS BORN OCTOBER 21, 1866, NEAR ROSEVILLE, IL., AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE AT THE HOME IN CLEARFIELD JANUARY 10, 1944, AT THE AGE OF 77 YEARS, TWO MONTHS AND 19 DAYS. AT THE AGE OF FOUR YEARS SHE WITH HER PARENTS AND TWO SISTERS CAME FROM ILLINOIS TO UNION COUNTY, IOWA, AND LIVED ON A FARM SOUTH OF KENT. SHE ATTENDED THE RURAL SCHOOL AT PRAIRIE STAR. IN 1875 THE FAMILY MOVED TO RINGGOLD COUNTY, LOCATING ON A FARM SIX MILES SOUTH OF CLEARFIELD. THERE SHE GREW TO YOUNG WOMANHOOD, ATTENDING NORMAL SCHOOL AND WAS A TEACHER IN THE RURAL SCHOOLS.

ON MARCH 4, 1885, SHE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO ELMER C. NICKLES IN MOUNT AYR BY THE REV. J.J. VOLLMAN. THEY ESTABLISHED THEIR HOME IN RINGGOLD COUNTY,WHERE THEY LIVED UNTIL 1912, WHEN THEY MOVED TO THE PRESENT HOME IN CLEARFIELD.

MRS. NICKLES HAS BEEN A FAITHFUL MEMBER OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF CLEARFIELD FOR 25 YEARS. SHE WAS A TEACHER IN THE SUNDAY SCHOOL AND HER BRIGHT AND SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION TO MANY OF THOSE SHE HAS TAUGHT GOD’S WORD AND LOVING CARE. HER INTEREST IN THE AFFAIRS OF THE COMMUNITY WAS MANIFESTED BY HER CONTINUOUS ACTIVITIES IN BOTH FRATERNAL AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS.

HER DEVOTED HUSBAND AND TWO SONS. ROY E. AND RAY D. OF CLEARFIELD SURVIVE TO CHERISH HER MEMORY. FIVE GRANDCHILDREN, RUE R. NICKLES, MRS. VERNON STRAIGHT, MRS. LYLE NORD, MRS. LEE STRAIGHT AND MRS. G. S. HOFFMEISTER AND EIGHT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN ALSO SURVIVE. HER PARENTS AND TWO SISTERS PRECEDED HER IN DEATH. ONE SISTER, MRS. ESTELLA REESE OF CRESTON, AND SEVERAL NEPHEWS AND NIECES ALSO SURVIVE.

FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD JANUARY 12 AT THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH WITH THE REV. GLEN B. WATERSON OFFICIATING. INTERMENT WAS IN THE CLEARFIELD CEMETERY.
