Eldon Lee Strange, son of Walter Eldon and Ocie Laveta (Schlapia) Strange, was born at home near Clearfield, Ringgold County, IA on February 27, 1943. Eldon began his education in a one room schoolhouse. In 1949, the family moved to the farm south of Diagonal and Eldon attended Diagonal school. He graduated from Diagonal High School with the class of 1961. After graduation, Eldon worked for a short time at the R.E.C. He served in the National Guard as a MP. He worked as a surveyor with the Ringgold County Engineers Office for five years before beginning a 38 ½ year career with the Department of Natural Resources. While working in Des Moines at the Department of Natural Resources, Eldon was introduced to Gwendolyn Kay Chrisman. The blind date evolved into a lifelong commitment to each other as they were united in marriage on September 14, 1969 in Blakesburg, IA. Both Eldon and Kay retired in 2004.
Eldon loved spending time with his family, relatives and friends. He loved to visit with people throughout his life, always telling stores of his high school days and the pranks that he and his friends did. Eldon loved to travel, and Michigan and Maui were his favorite places. Eldon and Kay traveled with the Senior Citizens Activity Center in Mount Ayr. They took 14 trips with the group and became friends with so many people. Marion and Mary Jo Hansell and Eldon and Kay loved to go on spontaneous trips: no real plans, just winging it. Eldon was intrigued with computers, cell phones and electrical gadgets. He loved the Iowa State Cyclones and enjoyed bowl trips with his family. Eldon was always helping with home projects with Sandy and Michael’s families until his health began to fail two years ago.
