MARIE JEAN BURMEISTER

Marie Jean Burmeister was born March 25, 1946 in Creston, IA to her parents Marion and Ruth Euritt of Mount Ayr where Marie grew up and ultimately spent most of her life. Marie attended school and graduated from Mount Ayr along with her close friends, Camille, Marie, Joen, Martha and Suzie, along with her sister, Marla Kay. This tight-knit group remained close for well over 60 years, attending many school and community functions together with their own kids. Camille, Joen, Marie (Still) and their families enjoyed over 45 years of New Year’s Eve celebrations with Marie and Phil.
Marie met her soon-to-be husband, Philip, in 1968 in Mount Ayr while she was student teaching. Marie graduated from Northwest Missouri State with a bachelor’s degree in 1968. Marie and Phil would be married two years later at the Mount Ayr Baptist Church, a month upon his return from Vietnam. Marie had spent the better part of two years writing letters back and forth with Phil during his time overseas.
The happy couple welcomed their first son, Jeffrey, on January 17, 1975, followed by Jeremy on August 3, 1981. The following years Marie spent much of her time following the kids in their respective school events, involved in community events through PEO, substitute teaching at Mount Ayr Community Schools, and of course playing many, many, games of bridge with her friends. In Marie’s later years she enjoyed visiting her sons in Maine and Colorado to see her beloved grandchildren, Dylan and Owen. Marie enjoyed whale watching on her trips to Maine and going to Estes Park on her trips to Colorado, along with numerous stops to the mall and Pizza Hut wherever she went.
Marie fought through several significant health issues throughout her life. She overcame two fights with breast cancer, diabetes, a liver transplant and numerous long visits to the hospital during her later years in life. Despite all of this, Marie always kept a positive can-do attitude, not letting her many personal health concerns get in the way of her life. Marie ultimately decided she was done fighting and it was time to visit her mom, Ruth, and “daddy” once again in heaven, leaving us on Saturday, May 15, 2021, when she passed away at Ringgold County Hospital.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents, Ruth (Hunt) and Marion Euritt, stepmother, Eleonore (Warden), brother in-law, Dan Roe (Marla Kay), sister-in-law, Sally Burmeister (James), sister-in-law, Janet Gos (Burmeister), and brother in-law, Jon Burmeister. Marie is survived by her loving husband, Phil Burmeister, of 51 years, her sons, Jeffrey (Sonya) and Jeremy (Lyndsey), granddaughter, Dylan, grandson, Owen, sister, Marla Kay, and nephew, Michael (Danica Roe and kids), along with countless other friends and family.
A visitation for Marie was held Wednesday, May 19 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr from 2:00-7:00. Family was present from 5-7 p.m. Service will be held at the Mount Ayr United Baptist Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 20 beginning at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. All memorial proceeds will be donated to cancer and transplant research.
