The Mount Ayr softball team won their second game in a row on Wednesday, June 11 at Central Decatur in an 11-3 win.
The win was the fifth straight over the Cardinals for Mount Ayr since July of 2021. The two teams will meet again on January 3.
The two teams were locked in a good game early. Mount Ayr scored twice in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Cardinals cut the lead to 2-1 after the first inning. The Raiderettes plated three runs in the top of the second to extend their lead to 5-1.
The Cardinals would respond, scoring twice in the bottom of the third to set the score at 5-3 after three innings. Mount Ayr would score the final six runs over the next three innings to end the game in the sixth inning.
Mount Ayr had a dozen hits in the game with four players with multi-hit games. Tatum Friedrich was 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Mount Ayr. Emma Reynolds, Anna Greenland and Breya Nickle each had two hits. Other hits were from Kensie Barnes, Dannie Stewart, and Adalynn Dredge. Reynolds, Barnes, and Keely Wasteney each had RBI’s. Greenland had a pair of doubles while Nickle, Dredge, and Barnes each had doubles.
Kensie Barnes was the winning pitcher after six innings of work. Barnes struck out three and gave up six hits and three runs. Morgan Havlik took the loss after five innings of work. Havlik struck out one and walked three. Breece Cornett led the Cardinals in hitting, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI’s.
The first win of the week for Mount Ayr was a big victory at Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The win was a 4-3 win on Tuesday, June 10 and just the second win over the Blue Devils in the last 17 meetings going back to 2008.
For most of the game, it looked like the Blue Devils were going to win the game in a shutout. The Blue Devils led 1-0 after the first inning and extended their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the fourth. That 3-0 lead held until the top of the seventh inning. In the seventh, the Raiderettes scored four runs. The big hit was a three-run home run by Breya Nickle that scored Kensie Barnes and Anna Greenland to give the Raidettes a 4-3 lead. Mount Ayr shut the door on the Blue Devils in the bottom of the inning to secure the one-run win.
Mount Ayr had eight hits in the game with three players getting multi-hit games. The 2-3-4 batters in the Raiderettes order of Kensie Barnes, Anna Greenland, and Breya Nickle each had two hits and combined to go 6-for-10 with four RBI’s and three runs. Nickle had a home run and three RBI’s and Barnes had a double and a RBI. Other hits were from Tatum Friedrich and Adalynn Dredge. Mount Ayr had six different players get on base via a walk in the game.
Keeley Wasteney was the winning pitcher after working all seven innings. Wasteney struck out two, walked four and gave up three runs, none of which earned, on four hits. Kathryn Ballard took the loss for MTSM after starting and going six innings. Ballard struck out four and walked five. Maclaine German also pitched in the game with one-inning relief work.
MTSM had only four hits in the game, one each from Karson Oberender, Maclaine German, Catlin Schmidt, and Kathryn Ballad.
The week ended with a game at home against the top-ranked Class 1A Wayne, 11-0. It was the first of two meetings between the schools. Mount Ayr will play at Wayne on July 1. The Falcons scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Wayne added two runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth to get the score to 11-0.
The Falcons had five doubles in the game. Ava Whitney had three doubles and Izzie Moore had two doubles. Ava Whitney was 4-for-4 with a four runs scored. Laney Harvey and Izzie Moore had three hits and Allie Jo Fortune and Brystal Peck each had two hits. Izzie Moore was the winning pitcher with six innings of work. Moore struck out 16 of the 20 Raiderettes pitched a no-hitter. The Raiderettes avoided a perfect game by Moore with a walk issued to MaKel Jones.
