LEON – The Mount Ayr cross-country teams made the trip to Leon last Tuesday to run at the Central Decatur cross-country invitational. Both Mount Ayr teams did not have enough to score as a team. Both teams will run at a meet hosted by Interstate-35 Thursday at East Lake County Park and RV Park in Osceola. It is the only meet of the week for Mount Ayr. The following week Mount Ayr runs at the Creston Invitational on Tuesday, September 23 at Southwestern Iowa Community College. Mount Ayr also will run at a meet in Guthrie Center on Thursday, September 25.
On the boy’s side, the Raiders were led by Braylon Greenwell with a 12th place finish in 19:10. Other Raider finishers were Austin Briner 40th in 23:50, and Kellon Shaffer 53rd in 27:22.
Chariton won the meet with a team score of 20 points. The Chargers are the top-ranked team in Class 2A and had the top-four individual finishers with sub 18-minute times led by meet champ Lucas Anderson in 17:02. Central Decatur was the runner-up team with 70 points. The Cardinals were led by Beau Waugh with a sixth place finish in a time of 18:39. Blake Tedford just missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th in 18:57, by less than a second by 10th place finisher Gable Whitlow from Moravia. The Wayne Falcons placed third with a team score of 87 followed by Clarke, Centerville and SE Warren sixth with 145 points. East Union and Mount Ayr also had runners at the meet but neither team had enough to score in the team race.
On the girl’s side, four Raiderettees competed at the meet. Two Mount Ayr runners placed in the top-10 finishers. Addison Doolittle placed fifth in 22:41 and Ryley Greenwell placed 10th in 24:13. Other Mount Ayr finishers were Ava England 19th in 26:10 and Irais Trujillo 23rd in 27:51.
The girls team race for the title came down to a pair of POI conference teams. It was the Wayne Falcons that would edge the Cardinals however, winning the meet with a score of 29 points while the Cardinals were a close second with 33 points. Chariton placed third with 58 points.
The Falcons had three-top-10 finishers led by overall champ Kinsey Prunty who won the girl’s race in 21:24. Central Decatur’s top finisher was Aubri Perkins with a third place finish in 22:33. Taylor Leahy gave the Cardinals a second top-10 finish by placing ninth in 23:57.

The Mount Ayr middle school cross-country team also competed at the meet.
On the girl’s side, Alice Briner placed second in a time of 11:02 while Mia Tseng placed 25th in a time of 17:48.
On the boy’s side, Jayden Doubleday placed second in 9:38 to lead six Raiders. Bohdin England and Warren Brooks had top-30 finishes in 12:54 and 14:42. Braxton McAlexander was 31st in 15:45, Mason Starmer was 32nd in 15:50, and Carter Giles was 36th in 25:12.
