MARTENSDALE, Iowa – The Mount Ayr volleyball team saw its run for a Pride of Iowa Conference tournament title come up short last Tuesday when they played SE Warren for the second time this season.
The Raiderettes beat the Warhawks on September 30 2-1 to claim the regular season title in the POI. Mount Ayr played twice in Martensdale, beating the host Blue Devils in the semifinals before losing to SE Warren in the finals.
Against Martensdale-St. Marys, Mount Ayr won the match 3-1. The Raiderettes won the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-23 to take a 2-0 match lead. The Blue Devils responded with a third set win of 25-21 to cut the Raiderettes lead in half. Mount Ayr didn’t allow the momentum to shift further, winning the fourth set 25-18 to finish off the match.
Aubree Shields had quite a game, totaling 35 kills on 64 attack attempts. Izzy Gilbertson added five kills on 21 attacks. Jaylee Shaffer had 39 assists, while Shields and Dannie Stewart tied for the lead in digs with 13 each. Mount Ayr served 85-for-94 with seven aces as a team. Abby Larson led, going 27-for-29 with two aces.
Two Blue Devils had double-digit kill totals with Abigail White getting 13 and Caitlin Reines-Schmidt with 10. Kylee Immerfall led in assists with 12 and Carly Krogman led in digs with 12.
After the MTSM win, Mount Ayr played SE Warren for the tournament title. There, the Warhawks beat Mount Ayr 3-0. The Raiderettes lost a close first set 25-23 to fall down 1-0 in the match. A 25-15 second set loss gave the Warhawks a 2-0 match lead. SE Warren claimed the match by winning the third set 25-21.
Mount Ayr had 99 attacks in the match with 28 kills. Aubree Shields led in kills with 22 while Jaylee Shaffer had 24 assists. Dannie Stewart led in digs with 14 and Shields had a team-high five blocks. Mount Ayr served 55-for-60 in the match led by Stewart who was 14-for-14.
SE Warren had 100 attacks and were led by Lexi Clendenen with 18 kills while Jessica Lillig had eight. Lillig led in assists with 24 and Clendenen led in digs with 14. SE Warren served 67-for-73 with 10 aces in the match. Belle Ewing led going 18-for-18 with four aces.
Mount Ayr will go to the postseason with an overall record of 27-10, the second most wins by a POI school this year.
The Raiderettes advanced out of the first round of the Class 1A Region 4 tournament as they swept Essex in three sets Monday night in Mount Ayr.
Mount Ayr won the match 25-8, 25-9, 25-8.
Offensively, Izzy Gilbertson and Aubree Shields led the way as the duo both had 15 kills. Jaylee Shaffer handed out 24 assists and got two kills of her own. Makenzie Knox had three kills, while Emma Reynolds added a pair of kills.
At the service line, Abby Larson was a perfect in her 19 serves which included four aces. Gilbertson and Dannie Stewart had three and two aces respectively. Shaffer also had a pair of aces.
Defensively for Mount Ayr, Shields had seven digs and Reynolds had three. Gilbertson, Shields and Stewart all had one block. The Raiderettes played in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (results were not available as of press time).
