Postseason Starts This Week

CORNING, Iowa — The Raiderette softball team enters the postseason with 12 wins under their belt. This comes after a 19-1 win at SW Valley on June 29 to sweep the season series between the two schools. In the other game of the week, Mount Ayr fell to state ranked Wayne, 8-0. Mount Ayr finished the Pride of Iowa Conference schedule with a record of 8-5, essentially tying with Martensdale-St. Mary’s who was 8-4. Mount Ayr’s record is 12-8 overall going to the postseason.
The Raiderettes overwhelmed the Timberwolves in the first inning, batting around in their order and putting up 10 runs for a 10-0 lead after the first inning. Mount Ayr kept the runs coming as they scored four in the second, three in the third and two runs in the fourth to take a 19-0 lead. SW Valley scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Keeley Wasteney was the winning pitcher after starting and going two innings. She struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. Ryley Greenwell also pitched two innings in relief and struck out five, walked one and gave up an unearned run. The duo combined to pitch a one-hitter.
Mount Ayr had 16 hits in the game as five players had multi-hit games. Wasteney, Emma Reynolds, MaKel Jones, Sophia West and Payton Worthington each had two hits for the Raiderettes in the game. Alba Friedrich drove in four runs, Talyn Greene drove in three runs and Worthington had two RBIs.
The Wayne Falcons didn’t score more than four runs in any of the innings in their game with Mount Ayr, but came away with an 8-0 win in five innings. Wayne led 2-0 after the second inning. That lead stood until the top of the fourth when they doubled their lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs. Wayne would double that lead in the top of the fifth inning with four runs to get its 8-0 lead.
Mount Ayr had three hits in the game. Tatum Friedrich had a double while Dannie Stewart and Alba Friedrich both had hits.
Kensie Barnes took the loss after working five innings. She struck out one and walked no batters.
Mount Ayr will host Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Wednesday, July 8 for their first Class 2A postseason game (results were not available as of press time). The Rockets are 15-17 overall. The winner will play at Class 2A No. 2 Interstate-35 on Friday.
